The Silver Jubilee on June 6th 1977 was surely the highpoint of the people's love of their monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II lit a bonfire in Windsor Great Park and the whole of Britain enjoyed a week of street parties to celebrate 25 years on the throne. When Elizabeth was born she was not even in line for the throne. King George V was the monarch from 1910 to 1936, followed by Edward VIII for just one year. He abdicated to King George VI who died in his sleep on February 6th 1952 following a lung operation, leaving young Elizabeth as Queen. |
